I was just reading through the blogs I follow and saw Lewis Cunningham’s newest post listing his year in review and goals for the new year. I really like the idea of being able to look back next year to see how much I completed.
2011 was a very good year for me, which was very much needed. I really have nothing to complain about in the year either professionally or personally, which is rare indeed š
But no progress can be made by being stagnant, so onto a new year that hopefully I can make even better. Below are my professional-related goals for 2012. I will check back in a year to see how I have done, and how my interests/priorities changed.
- Present at user groups at least 2 times – I presented once in 2011 and would like to keep practicing as I have a lot to learn and improve on in this arena
- Read at least 4 Oracle-related Books – These are the ones I have identified

- SQL Tuning by Dan Tow – I got through a decent amount of this a couple of years ago, but never finished. I really liked what I got through, so I need to make time to revisit it.
- Cost-Based Oracle Fundamentals by Jonathan Lewis – I also started this a few years back, but also didn’t have the time to give it the proper attention it deserved.
- Oracle Core: Essential Internals for DBAs and Developers by Jonathan Lewis – Jonathan’s newest book. A quick flip through and it already looks really promising
- Applied Mathematics for Database Professionals by Lex de Haan and Toon Koppelaars – One that has been on my list for some time now.
- Get another Certification – I got my SQL Expert certification last year. I will either go for the PL/SQL exam to get my PL/SQL OCA, or DBA exam to get the DBA OCA. Or maybe I will get real ambitious and do both.
These should all be relatively easy to achieve with a little bit of effort, and they will make sure I keep learning which is the most important thing for me. Here’s to wishing 2012 is everyone’s best year so far (and that the Mayans just ran out of space on their calendar š )
